Mary is responsible for supporting undergraduate education via teaching, laboratory coordination, scholarship, service, and academic advising for majors within the department. Laboratory coordination involves curriculum development, laboratory management, teaching assistant (TA) training and management, and financial management.
THREADING FLAVONES | NSF Award # 1044034 | 2011-2017
The Threading Flavones project interconnects experiments across the curriculum is to improve retention of information and decompartmentalize information while engaging students, promoting critical thinking and collaborative problem solving, and giving students an appreciation for the relevance of chemical concepts to human health. NSF funding was used to support undergraduate research efforts, project dissemination, and faculty-development workshops in Summers 2012 and 2014.
EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT | John Wiley and Sons
Mary has contributed PowerPoint slides for each chapter of Essential Biochemistry, 3rd edition by Charlotte Pratt and Kathleen Cornely (2012) for faculty use via WileyPLUS. More recently, she has updated lecture slides for each chapter for the 4th edition of the text, updated clicker questions, and developed assessment questions for new content in each chapter (2016-2017). She is currently developing questions for ORION - Wiley's adaptive learning technology.
Mary regularly teaches the undergraduate Biochemistry laboratory courses. Her interests are primarily in teaching undergraduates the fundamentals of experimental biochemistry, particularly structure-function relationships, experimental design, professional practice and scientific communication.
